run diskwarrior through it (if its a mac ipod) it'll find if there's anything majorly wrong - oh sorry i forgot its not showing up on your desktop... tried connecting it then rebooting it? (hold down menu and play till you get the apple logo).
other than that take it to the apple store - had troubles with mine and they replaced it for me (although my probs were a little more detrimental - don't tell em you dropped it! they'll look after you)
