It's a really sad thing. Not sure what to say at times like these - but I'm sure Herman is a lot happier now, the pain and frustration must have been pretty tough for him. I'm sure he's grateful for everything that you did for him and the times you spent together - and he's now free from the discomfort he must have been feeling in his later months.
Life is a single shot upwards. Death is as necessary as gravity - the fact we feel its pull, is a signal that we're alive.
