I am in your general age bracket and a few years ago felt the same thing, out of touch. So went to metacritic.com and just looked and the year end best of lists and just listened to as much as i could, either through library or online or whatever, so i didnt have to buy all of it.Turns out there is a WIDE range of music being made all over the place. Very diverse splinters of every kind of thing you can imagine. High quality psychedelic/folk/60s pop/electronic/speed metal/guitar rock in all sorts of great configurations. What sells the most is mainstream rap and bubble gum like Miley Cyrus and mid level country that is most all crap, but review those Metacritic lists and you will find loads of great great stuff that I am sure you and your wife will love.
For me, the best of the last several years - Arcade Fire -Neon Bible and Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise and the Shins and Boards of Canada, but there is a whole lot of really good stuff.....check it out!
