I've been to Madrid once and close to 10 times in Barcelona. My next trip to one of these will likely not be to Madrid.
Madrid is a very nice and boring capital. You need to know a local to know where the nice bars and clubs are. It has great museums if you're into it.
Barcelona has all the makings of the best city in the world (and it would be if only Spanish economy didn't suck). It has a great design scene, architecture, museums, beaches, parks, hills, clubs, restaurants and the best pickpockets in Europe during the tourist season.
The thing that will most certainly suck, will be millions of tourists like you.
In summer, you can just sit in front of MACBA among tens of other people at 2am, buy beer, samosas and weed from vendors cruising around and just chill...
Let me know if you need accommodation info.
