i had the problem where my 3g gets hung up in the backup phase of the update. i tried several times and finally, after a google search, discovered that that i'm not alone with this problem.
my 3g is just finishing now after a regular backup (which i let run over night), then a factory settings restore (which will then install 4.0), and finally a restore from the latest backup.
it seems to be fine, so far ... but what a pain in the ass!
- on mine the backup progress bar stuck for about an hour, just left it and it worked eventually.kingsteven
