    What is the correct terminology?

    As in...

Portugal is losing to North Korea 7-0
Portugal are losing to North Korea 7-0

England is going to beat France 4-1 in the QFs
England are going to beat France in the QFs

New Zealand is so fucking shit I'm supporting them
New Zealand are so fucking shit I'm supporting them

    'is'?
    or
    'are'?

Americans (North and South) say 'is'.

But that sounds fucking stupid to me.
Surely surely it must be 'are'?

COLLECTIVE term. A team isn't a cute little animal.

    • Sorry grammar nazi, but saying 'is' makes you sound like my grandmother trying to fit in
      ********
    • you're strangely affected with the Portuguese squad, why?kodap
    • there is only one team, therefore the grammatically correct answer is 'is' !
      ********
    • although I and almost everyone else says 'are' as you are right, 'is' sounds retarded.
