I did this about 6 years ago... I know there will be some cost differences because of time but it's an entertaining story nonetheless.

Bought a car in RI for $250 registered, it ran like crap and looked like crap but it ran... It was an 84 volvo station wagon. I insured it and loaded all my gear (snowboarding stuff, instruments, some small furniture, tv's, stereos, artwork, computers, everything that wasn't huuge) into the car and got a shipping quote for the vehicle. Worked out to be about $800, which was cheaper than gas and food all the way from RI to socal.

Shipped safely, door to door. And I donated the car to the Salvation Army and got a tax credit.

It's a little more 'down home' than most are willing to get into but hell it was pretty nice to have the car show up with everything and have them drop it at my front door...
