Go to your local music store and ask them to pack, or show you how to pack your instruments for travel. They usually have extra-correctly-shaped boxes from their own shipped orders laying around; if you're nice, you get 'em for free. Especially if they already know you.

I tend to talk my way onto airplanes with any instruments, since even with insurance I don't trust movers, and being a girl I get to use the 'helpless damsel' attitude to get my guitars stowed in the stewards' closets. But if you don't want to try that, I've also used FedEx Ground with no problems. Buy their insurance, but don't let them pack it; if you can't do it yourself, find someone who can! And I've also learned that if you don't have hard cases, don't ship. Strap those babies to you and carry them all the way.

Don't know anything about art supplies though. I once had paint explode in my suitcase and never tried again.
