Actually I think we have a pretty good idea of what the island is. If you add up everything that has happened and what Jacob and MIB's "mother" told them about the other people, one can infer that this island is the ultimate macguffin. It represents everything humankind searches for and fights over - immortality, power, paradise, riches, etc. Everything we have seen from the temple to the dharma initiative to Widmore's plans - are all manifestations of mankind's greed and search to become as gods. And it holds all the unexplainable things in our imagination -- origin of life, energy, secrets of time and physical space. It can be a paradise or a hell.
