I know how ya feel. Those guys are fairly harmless any more, except they're like this cancer on the south. They maintain the image of the racist, hick south that should be dead by now. But every region has its bigots - we just have a history of it, and thus the bad image. It's not too bad where I live (NC), but you can tell it's still there with some people. I think the best response we can have is to build positive and creative communities where the progessive-minded can be successful. We can't ignore or forget the bigots, but we can leave them behind in the past where they belong.
