Those dimensions sound correct. Every lightbulb on the screen is essentially one pixel, and considering most people in the audience will be far enough away, the image will look fine.
Fonts, make sure your colors are contrasty, you use whole pixel sizes / positions, and that you choose one that works for the design but is also legible. A Gotham-Light, for example, would be a horrible choice.
If at all possible, request to be able to preview your work on the screen, so you can adjust colors, sizes, etc accordingly. Your computer monitor is NOT a stadium screen. Distance, viewing angle, and weather conditions will all affect how your stuff looks on the screen, so seeing it will do you worlds of good.
