some of the trend comes in part due to the wider resolution equalling wider screen real estate. when i started it was 640 x 480. with the standard now being safely 950px (1024) we have a lot more room and obviously 1 wide column isn't a solution in general. so to fill the space and still be easy to read the multiple column solution becomes the fastest option.
