for me i spose i would look at both the work and the experience they've had, and how urgent you need someone too
If the kickass guy/girl was really into design and really wanted the job and was passionate about LEARNING and getting experience with me (and my fresh ass company) id hire him/her in a second, because these are the kids we need (kids like me! haha suuuure)
but...
if i needed someone who i could chuck in the deep end straight away and be confident in id hire the other guy/girl, but really work with him/her to help them develop their design/concept/whateva skills so that they become kickass
i think? ah whatever, passion over experience is what i think im trying to say...
