I did this last June. I am making, granted it is hard at times, but that is the freelance way, not constant check. I had a non design/photography related job, it killed my mojo big time. Working 50 hours a week + freelance gigs. I was easily pushing about 14 hours days, plus weekends. I did this on and off for 4 years.
If you can, stay until you land a job. I think it will be an easier transition and it's truly the smarter thing to do. Use that "negative" energy to propel you forward into a direction you want. It really comes down to piece of mind.
I don't think a paycheck vs no paycheck it is worth it. Egos aside, of course. KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) Land a job, get the fuck out.
