Totally know what you mean. It's really hard to work on a project when you're not feeling it...this usually happens to me when there is a lack of dialog between me and client.
Maybe you need to step back from this for now. Step away from the computer. Go to the bookstore and browse all sorts of books. Think about the nature of your client's business. You said competitors' sites suck...what is it that is lacking in them? Think about your client's customer-base. Why do they come to the site? What is they need?
