Chalk it up. Yet another wonderful property pooped all over by the Burton version. Add it to the list:

    Batman
    Sleepy Hollow
    Planet of the Apes
    Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
    ...and now, Alice in Wonderland

This was yet another attempt by Burton to gloss over his inability to tell a compelling story with lavish, wonderful design. I celebrate the fact that he's pushing the visuals as much as he does, but I just can't get past the fact that his storytelling is soulless and plain ol' lazy. Oh well. The movie theaters could use the support, I guess.

Next up for Mr. Burton, killing two ideas with one film: Sleeping Beauty + Wicked =

Burton is currently in development on "Maleficent", a retelling of the Sleeping Beauty tale from the perspective of the classic villain.

I sure wish he'd stick to his original works. I prefer him when he creates fun stuff like Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, Mars Attacks and even Ed Wood (Big Fish tried but was soulless, as usual). Those weren't compelling stories either, but at least they were unique, and weren't crapping all over previous versions and revealing the director's shortcomings as a storyteller.

    Happy Un-Birthday, everyone.
