you ever play armored core, e?
i was obsessed with it for a year. it's a mecha game in which you find and purchase parts (there are thousands) to upgrade your suit or "core"it seems like a really good reference for you, 'cause it breaks the whole mech down into individual parts which all have different functions, etc. might give you some ideas...
