    My process, depending on the source artwork -

    Scan at high res, into Photoshop
    Channel-select the content I want
    A succession of very small Guassian Blurs, then
    Level-tightening - to tweak out artefacts.
    Set channel content as black, set on to white background.
    Copy merged result, paste in Illustrator.

    At this point, artwork shold be higher res than I want, and have nice clean lines, so when I use LiveTrace, it gives a better result. with truer lines requiring less post-conversion fiddling.

    Of course, this is only really worthwhile if the source image is quite complex - if it's going to save more than the 5 minutes the above takes.
