Have the students layout their favorite poem (or song lyric) in a typographical style, using only three fonts and incorporting repititon, anomoly and whatever other principals you can think of. mix in one illustration using the pen tool. Using cmyk and pantone colors. but make the palette kinda strict.photoshop:
then give them the opportunity to add an image or images to the typographical layout. in the layout they must use a greyscale image, duotone (2 pantone mixes) and a cmyk mix.indesign:
then tell them to put it together in three layout sizes. Like a full page ad size for a mag with a bleed, a 1/3 page ad that's got a 1/4 inch white border, and a tabloid spread or maybe a poster size?just an idea...
that way you get to see whose got an appreciation for typography, and the ability to tweak their design to suit different applications (size constraints).
