as audria suggested above to use a broker in the price point you are comfortable with i would advise the same thing and stay away from craigslist.
i suggestto stay away from craigslist mainly for 1 reason of it being brooklyn and williamsburg/ greenpoint has a lot of shady developments and if you need any examples just ask jteore or Etype who both had some amazing apartments but both had to be evicted due to the shady landlord not making the developments to code.
you will find this a very common conversation about that area in general. so use a broker and be safe rather than not.

they ask for 1 months rent and thats it usually and they are good brokers. i took 3 different apt from them in the last 9 years living in that area.
