From the Times this morning:
"On long afternoons with no task to complete or deadline to meet, I’m filled with free-floating angst. Though I often, foolishly, yearn for proper leisure, with no obligations to meet and no pressure, the cold fact is that I’m happiest busy – beaverishly, feverishly up to the neck in some project. I like to work.
I got more pleasure out of building a bookcase last month than I’d ever have derived from buying the slickest, most expensive shelving that was ready-made. Fixing its knotted pine boards crudely with L-braces, I got blisters from the screwdriver, but I didn’t mind. Slathering the boards with varnish in the basement, I was far more content than I’d ever have been basking in Bermuda
I’d rather bake a tart than eat it, or order a slice in a café; I prefer to earn my crust. I love dragging furniture that’s far too heavy for me all about a room until the arrangement sings. Though I may dread the chores beforehand, once into the swing I can even relish balancing my accounts, hand-washing jumpers, and scrubbing the tub. Sure, it’s supremely gratifying to bash out the last line of a novel I’ve been writing for years. But really, any bit of industry will do."
but throw sex in there too :)
