Go shopping. Find the mattress you like and offer 50% of what the retail cost is---chances are the retailer will accept it. I just bought a $5,000 mattress for $1,800 about a month ago and I'm sure the store STILL made some pretty good money on it. Get them to throw in a frame or a mattress cover or pillows or something for free too. I'm sure mattresses aren't the first thing on everyone's shopping list when the economy is bad, so the store is really just lucky to have you in there looking at their shit.
At least that's how it worked out for me.
