  In producing them he may have have intellectual input that effectively changed the design significantly from the flat designs he was given to work to.

  Think about, when George Lucas made Star Wars it was all done on a budget and there was a lot of stuff to get done. He probably had a concept sketch of what he wanted, handed it over, and then the bloke who had to make it work in 3d as a functioning suit would have probably had much more input into the actual engineering design than anyone else. Therefore he's entitled to ownership.
