A) yes it is necessary, tying loose lends, transferring projects, informing those who need be, having some common respect and employer goes a long way in speaking to your next employer
B) leave in a courteous manner, remember once these people helped you , hired you and gave you a desk to call a job. did they make it difficult when you came on board/ why make it difficult when you are leaving?
