I bought a bike to commute back and forth from work/school. I looked at both your more traditional road bikes, fixed gears, and freewheels. After speaking with the owner of the shop I was at and telling him what my riding plans were as well as my fear of running into cars if I were to ride a fixie, we determined the freewheel route, w/ brakes, would probably be my best option as I don't really ride more than 10-15 miles/day. He gave me a flip-flop rear hub incase I ever want to try riding fixed (have yet to do so).

The appeal to me is simplicity. I don't need anything too complicated, or too expensive. Since I live in the NYC area and there aren't any real hills (minus the bridges) the need for gears wasn't there.

I had actually held off on buying a bike for a long time due to the fact that I also hated how trendy they had become, and the whole elitist culture surrounding bike riders in NYC.

At the end of the day, opinions are like assholes, everyone has em. I'm sure people look at me riding down the street thinking, "fucking hipster." More power to them.

If you want a bike, go to a shop and ride a few around the block. Buy whatever feels right for you and right for your needs.

I don't really see the point in starting threads such as these other than to stir shit up. Which, I can't deny, can be fun some times. Either that, or you are someone who can't really make a decision on your own, and seek the validation of the majority before making one.

    • My apologies, I don't normally get sucked into these sort of discussions - I've been drinking, go figure...duckseason
