I can't see a reason for you to not be able to see the layers palette.
go to Window > Layers or F7
if you say that you see a lock simbol, then my guess is that your object is locked.
select the object and do this:
- <alicetheblue
- when I open my objects menu, I get about a quarter of those options.Claymantis
