Actually Darwin's "idea" is just that... an "idea". It doesn't qualify as a scientific theory... it's not "testable" nor is it "observable", to name a couple of the criteria it misses. In addition to the lack of transitional forms - a major blow... but it also goes against the second scientific law of Thermodynamics which states that matter is moving from order to disorder - things bread down. According to Darwin's idea... things are gradually getting better. Hmmm... food for thought.
