Even in the so called "golden age" of hip hop there were people saying it sucked. As ideaist pointed out, there are still a lot of people making good hip hop today. The hip hop that typically makes it to the pop charts is only the tip of the iceberg. And yeah a lot of it is corny. But there are plenty of corny rock bands that have achieved commercial success but noones saying rock is dead or dying. Same can be said of movies or anything else that's expected to appeal to the masses for profits sake. On some level we all sell out for the sake of paying the bills. Especially designers.
