  I used to use the old Tom Scholz Power Soak for the same thing back in the early 90's live, not just recording..before you had all the modern high gain stuff you'd have to dime your amp to get those sounds. Using the power soak you'd be able to redline the amp but still play at reasonable volumes..

  EVH used a power attenuator for the early "brown sound" as well. Key to that early Van Halen sound..
