    Regardless of what Bringhurst says, I still like em dashes—like so—without no space either side for parenthetical statements in body copy. Occasionally, I'll use a font with a ridiculously long em dash and will have to break this rule; but most well-considered fonts have a modest em dash that automatically sets hair space on either side.

    The exception imo is for headlines; sometimes em dashes look overpowering in such settings, like massive diving boards on the page. In such cases I'll sometimes use an en dash with space either side, but again it also depends on the font.
