Nagano (Hakuba) - Big Time. Very remote. Might be skiing season then so it might be packed with skiing japanese.
Also much to see in Kyoto. Make sure you get to see the Fushimi Inari Shrine (Sake Shrine) in Kyoto. Rent a bike (1,000 yen a day) and go check out temples. Kyoto rocks. Lot's of awesome bars there.
Tokyo can get a little rough for a westener. Check out the Mori Tower (go to the Mori Museum of Modern Art, the Aquarium(!) and the skyview - 5,000 for all three) Make sure to load 10,000 yen on your paso card for the subway. Also check out the Odaiba Onsen Monogatari for a day of relaxation. Very Gaijin-friendly, edo style onsen park.
so much to do. so very fun. beer in vending machines!
