Also on the subject of ownership vs. self promo rights: even if they own the copyrights vis-a-vis you being an employee, you have the right to display the work online or in print, provided that you don't resell the work or lie about agency credits and/or your involvement in the project.
The only exception would be if you signed an all-inclusive NDA or a contract which specifically gave away all of your intellectual rights, in which case you'd be thoroughly bolloxed.
For example, I signed an NDA for only one specific project at my last job, and am thus unable to show it to anyone (in person or online) until the project is released to the public. Thankfully that was the only one.
