    Germany has a similar law, which states that you need to be able to tell a person's sex by their name, and they also prohibit joke names, such as naming your kid after cartoon characters etc. Pretty intrusive stuff.
    My sister had to butt heads with the state, actually; she wanted to name her daughter Pauline (pronounced the french way), but in german you pronounce the last vowel, so she would've been Paulineh with that spelling. So she had her entered as 'Paulin', which looked too suspiciously male to the state. The state refused, she appealed, explained her reasoning and had the official say it out loud, who finally concurred. And people complain about bureaucracy here...
