Song/lyric writing does seem abit stronger... which is pretty hard because Ben's been at the top on just about everything I've heard from him (including The Postal Service stuff... although I'm not sure off the top of my head if he actually wrote lyrics or just sung for that).
Production wise.. I guess I agree with you in ways, although I'd say "it sounds abit more mainstream", we have the facts had plenty of interesting production techniques on it.
Those guys really know their way around the studio - in atypical ways, and I guess I'm dissappointed this album doesn't reflect that uniqueness, but I guess it does allow for the songwriting to come forward abit more.
I'm getting pretty jazzed though, they are coming to down (for the first time) on Nov. 2.
