    The channels method works well if you have a good quality image on a noiseless background and the differentiation is already relatively crisp, but when you are working with a less than great image, where the background has noise and where the resolution has created indistinct transitions, I can tell you for free that just dodging on the best possible channel will look like shit.

    I do a fair amount of work trying to rebuild head shots from offline video footage and you wont get away with the channel method on that for example.

    It takes about ten minutes maximum to draw the hair as a super crisp mask in illustrator, and you then separate it into three different layers (about the 3 seconds work). This means you can individually blur different bits to create depth of field, rather than just bodging about with the blur tool across all of your mask and creating blur gussets between strands.

    • I hate seeing blur gussets on an image. A sure fire sign that someone has bodged a mask from the green channel.
