being in the UK starbucks is about double what you pay in the US and its not great coffee. it seems the coffee shop brands are still riding out the wave of novelty that is brits thinking they are really hip and cosmopolitan when they walk the streets with a cup of advertising space filled with weak brown caffeine sprinkled liquid.

if i had to name the best brands i'd say Costa and Nero, but they are not consistent. often its small independents that make it the best, although they mostly seem to sport illy machines.

good cups tend to come from fresh ground beans, buy a bag of decent bean from your supermarket, a hand grinder (for added experience and interaction with the process of making the drink) and let it brew in a cafetiere for a few mins, drop the filter to the bottom and your done.

i've been told that if your grind is properly fresh you'll be able to see the oil from the beans on the surface of the coffee once poured.

    • so true about the AD space. People just wanna shop at the GAP with thier logo adorned cups and green straws.baseline_shift
