Looking at Michael Heald's stuff, I was reminded of this bloke who I used to have a studio next door to. He used to be pure illsutration of the type you are looking for, but his website now seems to be filled with fairly shonky 'design' projects. Probably our of financial necessity. There's a few character illustrations on there though, and if you emailed him he has a tonne more he could send to you.
