I'm going to be a dad in November too... fortunately I work from home/myself... although still difficult staving off people, but at least I can be at home... I think I'll be doing a lot of nights and sleeping during the days.
Is there not a compromise whereby you can work from home for a set amount of hours each week? and go in once a week or something... It will help them and put your mind at rest that when you eventually go back you job is not on the line... Not that it sounds particularly a place to stay if everyone is relying on you...
Good luck with it all though.
