The fact that it's taken this long to locate and arrest him in is absurd. It's not exactly like he's been hiding. His artistic brilliance and related contributions to society have cozened and muzzled our judicial efforts.
It's wonderful that the girl (now grown up) has forgiven Polanski, but that simply does not exonerate him from responsibility. If her parents hadn't filed charges way back when, then it would be a different story. But the fact that he pleaded guilty and then fled the country means that he is guilty, and that he tried to place himself above, or out of reach, of our judicial system. If this guy gets a hall pass, then the sky's the limit on whomever else can get special treatment.
