ok :)
if you're not familiar with newsgroups (NNTP) it's like a cross between email and a bulliten board. People post things into 'groups'. Groups, for instance, are things like alt.binaries.multimedia.cartoons... In such a group you would find whole cartoons. Some kind souls post them, then others (leeches like me) download them.
But it's not as simple as all that. The files are usually divided up into sections that make up an archive. So, a single cartoon, say and episode of Justice League, may be divided up into any number of sections. You can downoad all the sections and reassemble them on your machine. Then you can just watch em in a media player, or burn them as a VCD or SVCD, and watch em in your DVD-Rom or your home DVD players (not all players support VCD and SVCD playback, a good Sony will though).
There are more details than this also(I know), but you can get all kinds of tv shows, movies - sometimes before they hit the theater, images, fonts, mp3's, and yes of course whole porn movies.
Anyone who is famililar with newsgroups knows that the flap over peer-to-peer mp3 trading is a big joke, because ppl were trading mp3's in newsgroups long before Napster had a logo and have been ever since, without fearing the RIAA.
There is a bit of a learning curve, but once you get past that.....
btw: have broadband.
