You misunderstood my note about the local thing, zman. i thought it was funny that i mistook someone else's statements for yours and in researching it found something you ACTUALLY said that i have said to others a number of times.
And that is, if local govts had more autonomy and power and more of a sense of needing to be a community unto themselves, i think we'd be better off. Too many times people are asked to think in the abstract about their fellow citizens (healthcare is a perfect example). They don't actually know or know of these people that politicians talk about who need help, who need support. And sometimes those very people may be in their own backyard, but because of various circumstances, they never cross paths.
But if people KNEW the people they were helping, and recognized that they were a part of their community and were able to see how that person's well being was in the interest of the common good, there'd be less of a resistance to helping them.Of course this theory has numerous holes, as every other theory about the ideal way to run a society
