I guess people take their cues from other people -> and in the case of an organised event, the crowd will follow the guy at the centre of the whole thing. It'd be pretty easy to assume that this kind of thing is part of the show maybe?
The guy who cut himself was obviously fucked up - but I still feel a bit sorry for him. The photo of Alex Pardee posing with the blood is a bit shit imo; even loons are people, and trivialising the whole thing actually does lead to desensitisation.
