Well, yeah, and there hasn't been anything happening so large that it's created an art/philosophy movement. I mean, look WW1 and the nihilism and horror and technology that came out of it created movements in art, literature, philosophy, politics, music..etc. that all went on to define the parameters of the rest of that century. All the major themes of last century came out of that global experience. We just haven't had that yet - so far. But something will happen. Always does. 9/11 and this global economic crisis is more 20th century than 21st in it's shape and origins, but something is coming. War? Environmental collapse? Artificial intelligence? Genetic
Not trying to make this political at all, just saying that the art created in the 20th century really reflected the events that happened that were unique to it - mass industrialized warfare, mass communications, cheap, fast global travel etc, that didn't exist in the 19th century. I don't think we've had any of those severe cultural dislocations yet that would differentiate the 20th century experience from whatever the 21st will be, so we're still mucking about in the old themes. I think everyone old enough to be posting on this forum today will within ten years time feel a serious dislocation with reality due to whatever is coming down the pike.
