from flash player 9.0.115 (if i'm correct) you can use either F4V and h264 (you have it as options on the flash encoder cs4)
But the main things you have to consider is the size of your video, the bitrate and how fast-moving are your images:
fast moving images = higher bitrate needed. (the higher the bitrtate the better)

Overall h264 compression gives you better results than flv but still, it all depends by the factors above.
Anyway, around 700Kbs/1Mbs you should get a decent result for a video sized around 700x400 pixels.
But again, is a trial-error process until you find the compromise. that suits you.

The new encoder gives you the chance to chose between variable bitrate and constant bitrate and gives you as options either the target bitrate and the average bitrate.

    • if i do it using player 9 then wont that mean it can be viewed on an earlier player ?liveforever
    • flv is supported since flash player 7, but flash player 9 is pretty much ubiquitous.Autokern
    • I mean, think about youtube: they use either flv for lo quality and h264 for HQAutokern
    • ok sweet - u bin alot of helpliveforever
