if you live in a major city chances are there's a camera or movie/film rental house that you could rent some gear instead of having to buy. That's the best option. Also, go to http://www.cinematography.com/ and they have open forums with endless info on tech info, lighting etc. and there are a lot of working cinematographers on it. If you ask the same question you asked above you're likely to get several people tell you how to do it.
