The layout seems to work except for the navigation. Seems a bit odd to have the text vertical. What would happen if one of the menu items exceeds a certain number of characters?
The menu needs work, IMO. Maybe it's a case of nicely designed columns instead.
Otherwise i like the look. I'd also shy away from placing text over the images and reducing them to a washed out grey...doesn't look appealing...
