The best way to illustrate your question, is to view the laser coming out of Greenwich Observatory. As light doesn't bend, you can clearly see the distance between ground and laser increase, and I'm sure I can't even see for 14 miles, let alone 140.
To answer to your question, no, you couldn't stab someone, as your knife/sword thingy would probably be half a mile in the air, rough calculation
