Currently I'm using evernote for my inspiration folder. It allows you to create notebooks of different bits of inspiration and also you can tag each piece of inspiration as to be able to browse by tags. It has several methods of input such as a desktop app with screen capture and also an iphone app as well which is handy and of course its cloud based so it means at work and at home you can get to that folder.
For your one big folder of awesome you could create one default inspiration notebook in evernote and sync away, with regards to it being unwieldy I'm not to sure how it handles thousands of images but if you tag them you wouldn't have to show all of them at once?
