i would think that for sprites you want to keep a bunch of small images in one large file. a logo or a banner are not necessarily very small and would up a master sprite file size needlessly.
also i think the main purpose of sprites would be to have many images that may change continuously and to keep them all in one place so instead of having to upload 30 files to the server everytime you change them you can just upload the one.
