actually, I do believe MS needs competition. However, I don't believe in the Open Source idiology as it stands today.

Before you ask, I have two towers on my desk, one running w2k and the other running a distro of SuSe. I've spent hours tinkering with the Linux box, and have enjoyed it. However, excluding it's server applications and having it as a hobby, it's useless for me.

As far as security goes, well, we could argue it all day. I'll wrap up my position like this: Windows is an easy target because of it's overwhelming prevelance in the marketplace.
I've run windows machines since the mid 90's. I've never used a virus scanner, always kept up with product updates and have NEVER had an infected machine. (knock on wood)

The example I presented about the gimp is, in my mind, characteristic of huge hurdles with open source development. Because real developers, not tinkerers like me, all clamor to work on the sexy projects and ignore the low profile stuff. There's no oraganization or flow to the development. It's disorganized, and important bits go without the attention they need and deserve. Usability is constantly a casualty of this development process.

I'll reiterate, I do want to see MS get a real competitor. I don't believe one exists today.

like I said before...there's always a trade off.
